Allergist Visits Reduce ER Risk for Kids With Asthma

Written by Ted Samson

Children with asthma who visited an allergy specialist had a 21 percent lower risk of emergency room (ER) visits or hospitalizations compared with those who didn’t see an allergist, according to a recent study.

Researchers looked at the records of thousands of children in Arkansas who had been diagnosed with asthma. They compared 2,964 children who saw an allergist at least once in 2018 with a matched group of children who didn’t receive allergy care from a specialist. The children who had visited an allergist were 21 percent less likely to have an asthma-related ER visit or hospitalization during 2019.

Allergist Visits and Asthma Action Plans Can Help

Asthma flare-ups can be stressful and disruptive for children and their caregivers. This research suggests that seeing an allergist can help reduce the risk of serious asthma-related emergencies by improving treatment plans, identifying triggers, and ensuring access to preventive care like vaccinations. Ongoing management strategies, such as preparing an asthma action plan and using doctor-recommended asthma-control medications, are essential for reducing ER visits.

If your child has asthma, consider asking their pediatrician for a referral to an allergist as part of a long-term care plan. Preparing for asthma emergencies is also key — this guide can help your family stay ready in case of a severe flare-up.
